A.A. Gde Putra Agung

Anak Agung Gde Putra Agung, Professor Emeritus at Bali's Universitas Udayana, son of the last Raja of Karangasem, passed away on 18th of May, 2023. In this book he revealed an altogether different picture of Bali's early days prior to the 19th Century to that of the 'island of paradise' popularly known today. Based upon three fascinating research papers, this book, put together by his son in law, Rodney Holt, documents a feudal world where the practice of widow-sacrifice (mesatja), slavery (perboedakan) and opium (tjandoe), impinged on the everyday life of the Balinese.
