In the Arms of the Angels: Memoirs of a Medical Volunteer
Rp150.000
This is the poignant story of a young girl brought up in Bali who progressively develops manic depression or bi-polar disorder. It vividly describes what it is like to “spin” out of control and lose friends and the chance of a college education, without really understanding what is going on. And then, the descent into lethargy, despair and depression. Above all, it describes the horror of being in thrall to a medical regimen that has no answer but to prescribe a lifetime of powerful medication with all its terrible side effects.
It is also an inspiring story of courage and love. Nadiye was fortunate in that she enjoyed the love of her family who supported her every step of the way so she might find the way back to health and vitality. And it is a cautionary and shameful tale of horrifying medical incompetence and ignorance, where over many years at great cost to both her well being, not to mention the considerable financial cost to her family, her doctors consigned her to a pharmacological hell on earth.
