Jan Mantjika was a dancer working for a newspaper in Palmerston North, New Zealand, when she married a Colombo Plan student. They moved to his home in Bali with their first child in 1964, and her husband took up a post as lecturer a few months before the horrific 30th September Movement, which triggered massacres nation-wide as Suharto came into power. Jan shares what it was like to live in Bali during these dangerous years, eventually establishing Jan’s Tours in the early days of tourism. Her love of the island and its people shines through her personal anecdotes. This intimate memoir finally releases shadows of long repressed memories to the light of day.
